Andres Iniesta’s injury-time leveller sent 10-man Barcelona into the Champions League final after a dramatic 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Spanish international rifled home a 25-yeard blockbuster in the 93rd minute to book Barca’s place in Rome, Josep Guardiola’s side had been second best for much of the game, but Iniesta’s last-gasp effort means they will face Manchester United in the European showpiece on May 27.
The Spain international struck a stunning goal in the 93rd minute to cancel out Michael Essien’s equally impressive ninth-minute strike to win the tie on the away goals rule following last week’s goalless stalemate at the Camp Nou. Chelsea were left to reflect on what might have been, although initial reaction to defeat was angry after referee Tom Ovrebo denied the hosts three strong penalty appeals.
But Chelsea were forced into changing their own tactics after 72 minutes, with Drogba hobbling off with an ankle injury. Brazilian center back Alex was booked shortly afterward after pulling Messi to the ground. The hosts then had another penalty claim waved away after Anelka was brought down by a clumsy challenge from Toure. And a third spot kick appeal was turned down when Gerard Pique handled Anelka’s deflected shot. But with just seconds remaining, midfield ace Iniesta smashed the ball home after a great pull back from Argentine wizard Messi to break Chelsea’s hearts.
