Sports popularity and passion especially that of football is so great that not only people are willing to pay big money to watch games, they also buy accessories to express their solidarity and support for the side they support. Fans buy these football shirts and other merchandise on a regular basis and the fact that they are not that cheap does not seem to be making any difference.
However, considering that the average price of a good football shirt is about £40 and the fact that not everybody can afford this price, it is high time that fans and authorities interested in sustaining the sport ensure that the prices come down to more reasonable levels so that many people can buy them and lend their support.
Football clubs also have a role to play in this. They should not be changing the designs on the shirts every now and then and since they do that for both home as well as the away ones, fans have no option but to keep buying new ones. They should be told to either retain a design for a minimum of two years or agree to sell football shirts that have been used for one season for a much lesser price. If this cannot be implemented then the relevant governing bodies must step in and enforce the same.
Due to this craze for football shirts, it is the parents who are the worst hit as the kids always want the latest shirts and tops. Moreover, since they are at a stage where they experience a lot of physical changes, the shirts have to be replaced ever so often and that is a great financial strain inflicted on the parents of such kids.
The need for cheap football shirts is essential since the cost of lending support to a football team is very high for a true football fan when one considers that various headings. That is why it is not surprising sometimes to see empty stands at games. Not everybody can always afford this high cost over a period of time.
To start with, there is the ticket for the game and while it is not much for a lower division match, it is quite high for Premier league and Championship games. Dedicated fans often have to buy season tickets so that they can follow the team they are supporting through all the games. This cost is a sizeable one indeed.
Then you have the cost of food and drinks when you are in the ground enjoying the match. Yes, you can avoid this cost but the occasion as well as the fact that you might feel hungry and thirsty after all the cheering will compel you to buy something and these items are quite costly as well at most grounds.
There is thus a need to reduce costs for the sake of the football fan and cheap football shirts that cost no more than £25 or £30 should be introduced along with an undertaking from the clubs that they would be changing their shirts only once a year. This will really benefit true football fans.
