Portugal and Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo held his FIFA World Player of the Year trophy with pride after receiving his award on 12 January 2009 at the Zurich Opera House. It’s no surprise that the dazzling winger was feeling a proud man as the names of previous winners of the global prize read like a who’s-who list of the beautiful game’s true legends. After picking up his prize, the best player in the world for the year 2008 shared his feelings “I feel great, this is a fantastic moment for me,” said the forward “I am very happy. It’s amazing to receive this award for what I did in 2008,” he added, with the trophy firmly gripped between his hands.

Ronaldo dedicated the award to his family but also paid tribute to influence of United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. He said: “It’s a dream come true for me to get this award and I would like to dedicate this to my family. But it’s also true that the manager always has an important role to play. It was a great season for me and for my club, and the coach was important for me because I learned a lot from him. His experience over so many years is of paramount importance – it’s a privilege to have such a great club manager. This is the climax of a fantastic era for me. I am happy and proud about what my team has done and what we have won. I am lucky to be part of the history of a club like Manchester United.”

Ronaldo began his career as a youth player at C.D. Nacional in Portugal and his successes with the team led to a move to Sporting Lisbon two seasons afterwards. His talent caught the attention of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and he signed the 18-year-old for £12.24 million in 2003. The following season, Ronaldo won his first club honour, the FA Cup, and reached the UEFA Euro 2004 final with Portugal, where he scored his first international goal.

Ronaldo received the award from Pele, and said: “It is an overwhelming moment and a very special moment in my life and I would like to say to my mother and sister that the fireworks can be set off now. I’m extremely happy, it’s one of the most important moments in my life and I hope I can come back.” Messi finished in second place and Torres came third ahead of fourth-placed Kaka and Xavi
