<p>This horse defeated hot favourite Fireside Chat – ridden by Lester Piggott – in his first ever race. In the rest of his horse-racing career, he won the King George IV, the Epsom Derby, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Eclipse Stakes, amongst other major races.</p>
<p><strong>Brigadier Gerard</strong></p>
<p>An underdog who rose to the status of champion, this contributed significantly to the popularity of Brigadier Gerard, and is why the horse continues to be remembered so fondly. In the course of 18 races over a three-year period, he lost only one – including several major race victories &#8211; and was awarded the British Horse of the Year title in 1972.<br />
Nijinsky</p>
<p>Nijinsky stands as the last horse in racing history to achieve the Triple Crown of Derby, St Leger and 2000Gns victories and overall was victorious in 11 of the 13 races he competed in. Major wins included the King George IV and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in the course of a glittering career.</p>
<p><strong>Desert Orchid</strong></p>
<p>One of the most famous race horses in the history of the sport, Desert Orchid was mourned like no other following his death in 2006. His ashes were scattered at Kempton Park race course. His greatest victory was in the rain, mud and snow at Cheltenham in the 1989 Gold Cup, when he stormed to victory uphill in the final run-in.</p>

<p>It is time for all athletes to meet up again and represent their country at the IAAF Championship. IAAF Championship is held every 2 years to showcase the world&#8217;s best athletes. Apart from the Olympics this is the largest athletic event in the world. IAAF Championship started in 1983 at Helsinki, Finland with 41 events and 1500 participants. This year there are 47 events and 1945 participants at the host city Daegu which will be held between 27 August to 4 September for 9 days. Daegu the fourth largest city in Korea has previously hosted three world cup football matches in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Daegu&#8217;s climate is appropriate for this event and its experience and magnificent scenery will enhance the event furthermore. USA is the current leader in gold medals with 9, while Russia and Kenya are 2nd and 3rd with 6 and 5 gold medals. The total medal tally difference between USA and Russia is only 1.</p>
<p><strong>100m Men Final – Usain Bolt</strong></p>
<p>Usain Bolt, the name that everyone is familiar with ever since the previous Olympics. The current world record holder in 100m was all set to stun the crowd again at the IAAF Championship. After sailing through all rounds Jamaica&#8217;s Usain Bolt managed to reach the finals. At the final round however history did not repeat itself as Usain Bolt was disqualified due to false start. Usain Bolt was no doubt furious at himself, as this opportunity to showcase his talent to the world will not come again anytime soon. His compatriot Yohan Blake eventually won the gold medal, with USA&#8217;s Walter Dix silver medal and St Kitts and Nevis&#8217;s Kim Collins the bronze medal.</p>
<p><strong>800m Women Semi-Final – Caster Semenya</strong></p>
<p>Caster Semenya has been in controversies lately regarding her gender row. Caster Semenya was previously suspended after winning in 2009. She has had nothing to say to press so far but she did win the semi-final 800m event. No doubt all eyes will be on her during the 800m final event which is to be held on the last day 4th September. The 20 year old South African is definitely going through allot of speculations but she is receiving support from South Africans, especially from Nelson Mandela&#8217;s wife and national congress MP Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Mariya Savinova from Russia, and the favorite at the 800m women&#8217;s event, is also supporting Caster. Mariya also believes Caster has been holding back and is waiting for the finals to showcase her maximum potential.</p>
<p><strong>Men 4x400m Relay – Oscar Pistorius</strong></p>
<p>Definitely one of the greatest stories in athletics has been Oscar Pistorius. The man from South Africa with no legs has motivated everyone around the world. His ability to compete against other athletes has astounded the world. Oscar Pistorius helped his team reach the finals, but in the final event he was dropped out. The amputee said that he was happy to see his compatriots win the medal but at the same time felt like he should be there too. Oscar, who is nicknamed the blade runner, was not eligible for previous Olympics. Oscar will always be in controversy due to his artificial limbs, and whether in future he will be allowed to participate fully or not will remains to be seen.</p>

<p>In yet another blow to the football club Arsenal, the team has been hit by the news of their midfielder, Jack Wilshere’s being out of action due to an ankle injury. It has been confirmed now, that Jack Wilshere will keep out of the field for the next two months, as told by the English International told on Sunday. The incident took place in July when, the 19 year old Jack took an ankle injury while playing against the New York Red Bulls.</p>
<p>Every one believed that his absence would be just temporary and Jack would soon be back on the field. But, to their disappointment, Jack has since been out of action completely and we won’t see him in action at least till November now. Wilshere himself confirmed this on the micro-blogging website, Twitter, “I can confirm I will be out for around 2-3 months! I am working hard in the gym to stay fit and I am gutted but I will be back stronger.” The injuries gained during the pre-season tour made Jack miss the first three matches of the English Premier League this season, and the club has gained only 1 point from those three games. The midfielder has been wearing a surgical boot eversince, as he is waiting to recover from the injury but he can only be expected to resume some light training in the month of October. This news is a big setback, more because the club Arsenal because they have already lost the two players Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri before the closing of the transfer window. Although, the club has signed in good player from Everton in the name of Mikel Aeteta and from Chelsea in the name of Yossi Benayoun, in place of the two transferred players, Jack Wishere’s long absence has is a cause of worry to the manager Arsene Wegner who is already stressed because of the latest developments in the football world and because of his team. Arsenal’s forward player, Theo Walcott was heard saying that Jack is a very important player for the team. Others were heard saying that it is a shame that Wilshere got his ankle hurt. In another instance, one of the team members said that Jack is a bright lad and he will be back in action on the field as soon as he can. Another fellow of the team Arsenal was quoted as saying that they have their fingers crossed and are hoping that Jack returns earlier than the expected time. They hope he just has to get fit quickly as possible. Although Jack is loved by all of the team members but, they are professionals who know how to deal with the situation.</p>
<p>Because of this untimely and unfortunate ankle injury, the Mid fielder will also miss some of the most important games in the champions league and English Premier League for the club Arsenal along with England’s final Euro 2012 qualifier match in Montenegro.</p>

<p>Carlos Tevez, the famous Argentine Footballer and forward for the Manchester City club in Barclay’s English Premier League, went into a rehab after his summer eating binge. He said that the overeating was caused by depression. The depression was evident from the fact that he had repeatedly expressed his strong desire to leave the club. Lifting the lid from the turmoil he was suffering from, to quote Tevez, &#8220;I had a personal crisis this summer; I put on five or six kilos (11 to 13 pounds) and had to check myself into a clinic. I was depressed and so I ate and ate. Only my family and my friends know this.”</p>
<p>The star footballer was ridiculed by his fan following for missing a crucial penalty kick against Uruguay. This happed in the Copa America Cup because of which Argentina was knocked out in the quarter final round. Tevez was disheartened by this and he later expressed his views saying the rumors about him deliberately missing the shot were not justified at all as he had not conspired against anyone. He said that people have the freedom criticize his game if he does not perform well in the game, but no one has given them the right to say that he missed the shot so that the coach of the team would be sacked. This he regards as having bad feelings against him. It would be really hard for Tevez now to blend in the life in Manchester City although, he has in the past said that he hates living there. Considering the fact that his family has recently moved with him to a pompous £20,000-a-month house situated in Alderly Edge. Tevez should now try to concentrate on building a healthy partnership with his team mate Sergio Aguero as his club is eying for the English Premier League championship title. But Tevez has already revealed that Sergio is facing difficulty in learning the local language, which is English. He said “Kun is studying English. I would say give him a week or 10 days more and he will give up. The first week, he said: ‘I’ve got English today’. The second week he said the same but with a different expression on his face&#8230;and the third week he went off for a siesta instead.”<br />
Manchester City’s problems related to weight are not restricted to Tevez only, Kolo Toure was slapped with a six month ban after he consumed diet pills which belonged to his wife. At an FA hearing evidences were provided which showed that Toure has become obsessed with his increasing weight. Now that he is returning to action, he revealed that he worked with a special trainer in Ivory Coast for a period of three weeks. Manchester Club did not suffer much from Toure’s and Tevez’s  absence and now they must strive hard to regain their lost charm for the club.</p>
<p>In the recent turn out of events, Rafael van der Vaart, midfielder for the club Tottenham has been sidelined for a period of six weeks after he suffered from a hamstring injury.</p>

<p>The IAAF Championship in Athletics is currently being held in Daegu, Korea. A series of athletic events that started on 27 August will go on for 9 days till its closing date on 4 September. The on-going world athletics event gives the best athletes around the world an opportunity to showcase their talent and represent their country. The IAAF was held every 4 years until 1991, after which it was held for every 2 years. Last time the 2009 IAAF Championship was held in Berlin. The first ever IAAF Championship was held in Helsinki, Finland in 1983</p>
<p><strong>Events and Participants</strong></p>
<p>This year at Daegu, there are 47 athletic events and nearly 2000 participants. The first ever IAAF Championship had 41 events and nearly 1500 participants. Apart from the Olympics this is another major opportunity when athletes from different countries get to meet and compete. This major athletic event also gives the viewers entertainment, especially to those who have to eagerly wait for the Olympics which are held every 4 years.</p>
<p><strong>Daegu</strong></p>
<p>Daegu which is the fourth largest city in Korea may be a perfect place to hold this event. The climate of Daegu is suitable for holding athletic events as the temperature during August and September is 25 degrees Celsius (75 Fahrenheit). Daegu is also the first city to host the IAAF Championship in Asia, and the fourth city to host it outside Europe. Daegu has previously hosted 3 matches in 2002 FIFA World Cup, hence making it experienced in hosting major sports event. No doubt both the athletes and viewers will be happy with what Daegu has to offer.</p>
<p><strong>Medal Tally</strong></p>
<p>USA holds the current record for net medals won and gold medals won in IAAF Championship. Russia is second while Germany is third. USA has total of 120 gold medals and is far ahead of the second position holder Russia with 37 gold medals. This year at Daegu USA is also in the lead with 9 gold medals, Russia second with 6 gold medals and Kenya third with 5 gold medals (as of 2nd September). The difference between the total gold medals at Daegu is only 1 between USA and Russia.</p>
<p><strong>Major Events</strong></p>
<p>A series of indoor and outdoor events are being held at IAAF Championship every day, making each day exciting and memorable. The indoor events are being held in the extravagant stadium of Daegu which is simply called as “Daegu Stadium”. Currently no major record has been broken regarding any event; however history is still being made as many sportsman and sportswoman have waited for this moment all their lives. The first event was the women&#8217;s marathon on 27th August while the last event will be men&#8217;s 4&#215;100 meter relay. Some of the most popular events in IAAF are the 100m, 400m, Long Jump, High Jump, Javelin Throw, Marathon, Relay Races.</p>
<p><strong>100m Event</strong></p>
<p>Arguably the most popular athletic event the 100m always catches the viewers’ attention. This time all eyes were on Jamaica&#8217;s Usain Bolt, the world record holder. His performance during the previous Olympics stunned the crowd as he broke the record and convincingly won the gold medal. However, this time Usain Bolt after reaching the final round was disqualified due to a false start. The gold medal then went to Yohan Blake, a fellow compatriot of Usain Bolt.</p>
<p>This IAAF Championship has turned out to be magnificent mainly due to Daegu, which has done its best to please the athletes and crowds. This event every 2 years brings people together to celebrate and enjoy excellence in sports.</p>

<p>Worried about what to wear, what you need to take, whether you will get lost and what to do at the start and finish? The key to a successful and enjoyable race day lies in the planning and preparation. Your training programme should have taken care of your running fitness, so relax and enjoy the experience of participating in an event.</p>
<p><strong>Taking the panic out of race day<br />
</strong></p>
<p><strong>Before the day:</strong> Enter and pay in advance. You will be sent a race number or told how to collect it on the day. If the race is early in the morning and far from home, consider booking accommodation for the night before.</p>
<p><strong>One day to go:</strong> Pack your kit bag. Don&#8217;t forget to include your race number and some safety pins to attach it to your vest or T-shirt. Take spare clean clothes and shoes to wear after the race and a post-race snack. Make sure you have read any race-day information. Find out about the course/route and where to park your car, and double check the start time.</p>
<p><strong>The big day:</strong> Eat a light breakfast &#8211; some cereal, a bagel or some toast two to three hours before the event usually works best, kick-starting your metabolism and supplying your body with energy. Drink water, juice or an energy drink in the hours before the event.</p>
<p><strong>To the start line</strong></p>
<p>Arrive at the venue an hour or two before the start. Generally speaking, the more runners in an event, the earlier you need to arrive in order to have plenty of time for pre-race preparation, including possibly collecting a race number or timing chip. Arrange a secure place to leave valuables and find out where the toilets and the start line are. Allow sufficient time for your warm-up, which should be the last thing you do before you jog to the start line. Get to the start area at least 15 minutes early and to the start line at least 5 minutes before the event is due to begin. For bigger races with more entrants, you will need to arrive at the start line up to 30 minutes before the race begins. If you have gone to the event with family or friends, fix a place and time for everyone to meet up after the event.</p>
<p><strong>The start<br />
</strong><br />
This may look like a mass bundle of runners jostling, barging and all charging off at the sound of the gun, but actually the start is always well organized. The key is to find a location in the starting area that is suitable for your ability and experience. The speedier runners typically line up at the front of the field. Some events have predicted finish-time start areas to help you identify the right place. Otherwise, look around and you will soon spot other women who look your sort of level.</p>
<p><strong>Finding your pace</strong></p>
<p>Once the start signal goes, everybody will begin to move forwards. Try to settle into your own pace. In mass-participation races it can take a while to cross the start line &#8211; up to 20 minutes in major city marathons. If you are aiming for a particular time, stick to your pre-race plan and time splits &#8211; perhaps write them on your hand. It is tempting to start off too fast, but try to hold back and establish your own breathing and stride patterns and running rhythm. If things don&#8217;t going to plan, don&#8217;t panic: reassess the situation as you go and have a back-up strategy to get you to the finish line.</p>

<p><strong>Top training tip</strong></p>
<p>Develop a pre-race routine. Doing the same things in roughly the same way and same order before you race will help you remember everything and keep you relaxed and focused.</p>
<p><strong>After the event</strong></p>
<p>Relax, you have done it! Celebrate your achievement and enjoy the moment of your success. Meet up with your friends and family, and bask in your glory. When you prepare for a race, planning seems to stop at the finish line, but there are still a few things to consider afterwards. A cool-down is always a good idea; even if you are tired, you will benefit from a few minutes of very light jogging, walking and some stretching. This will help reduce the risk of muscle soreness over the next day or two.</p>

<p>Sticking to natural, non-processed foods is a great way to achieve a healthy eating routine. All women are individual and the energy (calories) required each day for keeping the body active can vary according to body size, muscle mass and activity levels. (Weight is gained if energy consumed is greater than energy spent.) However, even if we differ in the quantity of food we need to eat to stay active, we should nevertheless be eating the same types of foods in the same relative proportions.</p>
<p><strong>Fruit and vegetables</strong><br />
Low in calories and packed with fibre, vitamins and minerals, fruit and vegetables provide a healthy and essential component to any diet. In short, more fruit and vegetables will help you lead a healthier, longer life, protecting against heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain types of cancer. These foods also contain good-quality carbohydrates &#8211; an essential fuel for your muscles. Include vegetables of all colours, especially the orange and dark green ones which are high in antioxidants.</p>
<p><strong>One serving</strong><br />
- 1 medium-sized piece of fruit (apple, orange, banana)<br />
- 2-3 tablespoons fruit salad or tinned fruit<br />
- 2 tablespoons vegetables<br />
- 150 ml (1/4pt) fruit juice</p>
<p><strong>Breads, cereals and potatoes</strong><br />
Full of carbohydrates, this group also contains pasta, rice and noodles, and makes up the body&#8217;s major currency for energy. Carbohydrates are simply all the sugars and starches in the diet. A balanced diet should be drawn from a variety of carbohydrate sources, although it is important to remember to choose those carbohydrate foods that are rich in nutrients. The bulk of your carbohydrate intake should derive from cereal and starchy sources &#8211; including bread, potatoes, rice, pasta and breakfast cereals &#8211; as well as the less common starchy vegetables, such as sweet potatoes and pulses (peas, beans and lentils). The remainder of your carbohydrate intake can come from more sugary sources, such as sugar, fruit and juices.</p>
<p>If you are a woman runner, it makes sense for your diet to be primarily made up of these foods. Fad diets that exclude carbohydrates are a quick fix and rarely have effective long-term results. As your running distances begin to lengthen, you will find that your body requires more carbohydrate to meet the demands of your increased energy expenditure, and so you may need to consume more than the daily recommended amount.</p>
<p><strong>One serving</strong><br />
- 1 slice bread<br />
- 1 small bread roll or small pitta pocket<br />
- 3 tablespoons breakfast cereal<br />
- 2 tablespoons cooked pasta, rice or noodles</p>
<p><strong>Milk and dairy products</strong><br />
This food group contains milk, cheese, yogurt and fromage frais (but not butter, margarine or cream). These foods contain many different nutrients, but are particularly rich in calcium, which helps build and maintain stronger, denser bones. As a runner, it is essential that your joints and bones are healthy. Dairy produce is also high in protein, vital for rebuilding muscle after a run. The protein and calcium in dairy products are in the non-fat part of the food, so low-fat varieties are still nutritionally beneficial.</p>
<p><strong>One serving</strong><br />
- 200 ml   pt) milk<br />
- 1-2 pots fromage frais, each 15 g<br />
- 1 small pot yogurt, 25 g (1 oz)<br />
- Matchbox-sized piece hard cheese</p>
<p><strong>Meat, fish and alternatives</strong><br />
These foods are all rich in protein, needed for muscle and immune system growth and repair. Some can also be high in unwanted fats &#8211; beef burgers, for example &#8211; so choose lean cuts of meat, trim off visible fat or go for non-meat alternatives. These include pulses, nuts, seeds, soya products such as tofu and vegetable protein foods such as Quorn. Vegetarians will increase their protein intake if they mix grains with seeds (lentils with rice, for example).</p>
<p><strong>One serving</strong><br />
- 50-100 g (2-4 oz) lean meat or fish<br />
- 2 tablespoons nuts or nut butter<br />
- 4 tablespoons cooked lentils<br />
- 2 eggs</p>
<p><strong>Fats and sugary foods</strong><br />
Fewer than two servings from this group should be eaten daily. Fats and sugary foods add variety and provide energy as sugar, but should not replace more nutritious foods. Not all fats are bad fats: monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats actually reduce levels of LDL or &#8216;bad&#8217; cholesterol, while saturated fats raise them. To lower risk of cardiovascular disease and other illness, control your intake of unsaturated fats and avoid saturated fats and trans fats (the latter are often indicated on the label of processed foods by &#8216;hydrogenated oil&#8217;).</p>
<p><strong>One serving</strong><br />
- 10 g (1/3 oz) butter or margarine<br />
- 1 teaspoon oil<br />
- 1 packet crisps<br />
- 3 teaspoons sugar</p>
