Sunderland have confirmed Steve Bruce has been appointed as the club’s new manager. The 48-year-old has signed a three-year contract to succeeed Ricky Sbragia, who stood down at the end of last season. A statement on Wigan’s official website read: “A compensation fee has been agreed between the two clubs, freeing Bruce to move to the Stadium of Light.

Wigan are set to receive a compensation fee approaching £3m for Bruce, having paid £3m themselves to secure the manager from Birmingham in 2007.

Steve Bruce

The 48-year old has signed a three-year contract with the Black Cats, until 2012. Bruce has established a reputation for producing well organised teams and for unearthing and nurturing terrific talent, something he has done exceptionally well at Wigan Athletic. In the season just ended he steered the Latics to a highly creditable 11th place finish. A brief earlier spell at Wigan in 2001 separated stints as manager of Huddersfield Town and Crystal Palace before a six-year tenure with Birmingham City.
After completing the deal to bring Bruce to Sunderland, Chairman Niall Quinn expressed his delight: “Steve will bring a professionalism and strength of character to this club that will really help to bring us forward to where we all want to be.

“It’s the perfect time,” he said. “I’ve worked over 10 years for a chance like this. It’s up to me to put a team on the pitch now. I can’t wait to start. I just want to continue the progression of the club over the last few years. An average of 42,500 shows what kind of support we have. The aim is to take the progression forward, we don’t want to be flirting with relegation. To get up to 10th where Wigan were would be a huge improvement.”

Quinn, who became club chairman in July 2006, added: “Steve will bring a professionalism and strength of character to this club that will really help to bring us forward to where we all want to be. “Steve knows more than anyone what football means to people of this region, and I’m confident that he will be able to instil into our players exactly what it means to play for this football club.”Bruce will be assisted by his backroom team of Eric Black, Nigel Spink and former Sunderland striker Keith Bertschin. With a few weeks to work with all his new players before transfer deadline, Bruce said: “I’m going to give them all a chance. “Whatever happened in the past, I’m not interested in. I’m proud to sit here as Sunderland manager and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

The appointment of former Manchester United defender Bruce is the first significant change at Sunderland since American businessman Ellis Short took total control of the club at the end of the season.

In Nairobi, Kenya captial city, on May 6 – A Kenyan Arsenal fan committed suicide on Wednesday following his team’s 4-1 aggregate drubbing by arch-rivals Manchester United in Tuesday night’s Champions League semi-final, police said Wednesday.

Apparently, Kenyans take English soccer very seriously. Twenty-nine-year-old, Suleiman Alphonso Omondi, living in the capital Nairobi‘s Embakasi neighbourhood, hanged himself in his Arsenal shirt later they lost to Manchester United.

“We were watching the match at Bamba 70 pub, and when Arsenal was defeated, Suleiman just walked out in protest and he was crying,” Calvin Otieno, one of his friends, told AFP”.

“We didn’t know he was going to hang himself until this morning when we received the reports and came here to find his body at the balcony,” Otieno said outside the deceased‘s home.

Arsenal slumped to a 3-1 defeat at home in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal, capping a disappointing season for the Gunners who were already out of the Premier League title race early in the season. Football-related domestic tragedies are frequent in the region, where English clubs enjoy passionate following and European games draw more attention than national and continental games.

Arsenal is one of the most popular clubs in Africa, English Premier League and Champions League are among the hottest football fixtures on the continent. They are more widely watched than Africa’s own domestic league and CAF Champions League.

Italy’s top football division Serie A is breraking away from the Serie B to form a new league called Lega Calcio Serie A (Serie A Football League), as early as next season and create its own independent league modeled after England’s Premiership, officials said on Thursday. The two divisions have been unable to reach an agreement over finance position and Serie A is set to copy the formation of England’s Premier League. The English Premier League increased its share of television revenue after breaking away from the other divisions in 1992. “The Nineteen Serie A clubs yesterday decided to create the ‘Lega Calcio Serie A’,” said a statement by the new league. “The decision was made because of the impossibility of reaching an understanding with the Serie B clubs” the statement added.

“We’ve made a new first division league,” Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini told the ANSA news agency. “Am I satisfied? No, but it’s necessary.” Italian clubs have faced widespread criticism after only Udinese, in the UEFA Cup, reached the quarterfinals of a European competition this season. Italian teams have argued that its alliance with Serie B ensures that English and Spanish clubs have more money, and therefore can buy better players and be more competitive.

The new deal primarily allows Serie A teams to negotiate better, and more lucrative, TV deals without worrying that they have to share revenue with smaller clubs. The split also ensures that the 20 clubs will not be forced to bail out Serie B teams whenever they encounter money problems.

Italian top flight clubs (Inter Milan, Juventus and AC Milan) are determined to close the gap on Premier League sides, who have increasingly dominated European competition. The Premier League is the richest in the world and has had three teams in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the last two seasons, while top-flight English sides have been involved in the competitions last four finals.

Maurizio Beretta, a former journalist, was chosen to set up the new league. “The mandate is clear,” he told reporters during a news conference. “To start building a first division. There are various aspects to sort out. The mechanism will be put in place over the next 12 months.”
