US OPEN 2009 – Day 1

Day 1 at the US Open 2009 presented Roger Federer opening the Men’s Singles action at the Arthur Ashe stadium. The Swiss champion won easily against local youngster David Britton. American’s had several reasons to cheer as John Isner defeated Romanian Victor Hanescu in straight sets.

Women’s Singles action was started by returning star, Kim Clijsters. The former World No.1 won 6-4\6-1 against Viktoriya Kutuzova of Ukraine in the very first match of the US Open 2009 on the Centre court. Victoria Azarenka, seeded 8th, qualified for the 2nd round after a straight sets defeat over Alexandra Dulgheru.

The William’s sisters had different performances. While Serena crushed Alexa Glatch 6-4\6-1, sister Venus played a real marathon against Russian, Vera Dushevina. Venus needed 3 hours to obtain a 3 set win. Dushevina managed to win the 1st set 7-6 but lost 5-7 and 3-6 the following ones.

Andy Roddick completed the day whith a clear win over Bjorn Phau. Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic will enter the tournament today, together with many other top class players.
